After seeing this, I hope they throw the friggin' book at this ass hat. Let's recap here dickhead: You lured 2 friends from California half way across the country to sell you a KILO of blow. You and your other friend decided to rob and murder these other 2 ass clowns from Cali over a KILO of blow. One of the victims escapes the garage in a bloody mess and tears off down the block of a decent neighborhood in broad daylight. At this point, and this is my favorite part, you pursue said gentlemen down the street in an SUV while you are covered in blood and actually stop to ask a witness, "Ahhhhh which way did he go, which way did he go". And you scream that you are the victim. No Thunder, we are. We watched another hyped running back sport the #1 for our football team only to watch you turn out to be nothing but a dumb thug. Exactly how many chances did you think you were going to get? And killing someone over a KILO? That's like carjacking and killing someone for their highly used 1983 Ford Escort. Watch out for your cornhole Thunder.

Bellevue Protest

Tomorrow there will be a huge protest outside of Dr. Leroy Carhart's abortion clinic in Bellevue, NE. This is a very hot topic in this country to say the very least. This post isn't about pushing my beliefs on anyone. I feel it is truly sad that people who are protesting to protect life are often times the same people who go to radical extremes (bombings and shootings) to make their point. Now don't get me wrong, I don't think that every pro life protester is violent. However, is it really reasonable to stalk the man in the airport, burn down his barn, phone in threats to his children, and smear manure on his building to make your point? I say this b/c it has happened and continues to happen to him. So obviously, some people think these tactics are fair game.

I'm linking a couple articles here that I think everyone should read. First one is from an interview he did with Newsweek. Very interesting story about how he entered this profession. I've often times wondered do they just wake up one day and realize this is their calling? How morbid. Anyhooo, next article is linked from the front page today of CNN.com referring to the upcoming protests in Belleuve.

I could go on and on with this topic, but I want to keep it short. My intentions here are to stimulate thoughts on this subject. I have my beliefs, I don't expect everyone else to share them. The beauty of this country is that we are all entitled to have those beliefs and they don't all have to be the same. No one should have to go through life wondering if someone is going to shoot them during church services for having those beliefs.

A Proposal

So I'm sitting here after a lovely lunch thinking, "Just what is the OBC?" I asked Andy the same a while back (a long while back) and he said "uh it's our book club, and we' live in Omaha". ... Ok, he didn't really say that but it was something equally lame and he finally admitted it wasn't really about books any longer. I think there's a total of 3 posts about books thus far.

Even though the original goals of discussing books seem to have been forgotten, it appears the will to post has not died completely. However I think it's time for a new name, because you know, I've posted here so many times already. Maybe a name that will encourage even more posting in the future. So in sticking with the OBC theme, I offer the following suggestions:

Old Balls Club

Omaha Belligerent's Club

Original Bastards Club

Outlaws By Choice

Oh! Playoff hockey (g0 wings) and cubs baseball (whatever, I guess the cubs still qualify as a sporting team). Everything was going swimmingly until someone who shall remain un-named on the interwebs (you know who you are BF) casually remarked about blankity blank's ( I apologize, I don't give a rats ass about any cubs player enough to name them) steal of first base. A quiet hush fell across the room. Peers turned to each other in a confused stupor. Stealing first? Is that even possible? Like when you're standing in the shower and think that moment would be a good time to make toast. Sounds feasible right? Make toast. Shower. Save some hard earned time. Then you realize that you CAN'T MAKE FUCKIN' TOAST IN THE SHOWER. Just like you CAN'T FUCKING STEAL FIRST BASE. Now this oversight would have easily been overlooked had the offending party simply admitted the guffaw and moved on. "HAR HAR HAR, what was I thinking? You can't steal first?" The argument that ensued was ridiculous and doesn't even need to be rehashed. I've argued things I have known to be wrong on many occasions and I'm sure any of you can readily quote . . . 30 of them. So without further ado, I present the only legal ways to reach first base. These are like gravity people, they are not just rules, they are the law:

1. Hit
2. Error
3. Walk
4. Hit By Pitch
5. Strike Out but catcher drops ball
6. Catcher's Interference
7. Fielder's Choice

Elementary right? Apparently not. This is all in good fun and I'm not trying to beat a dead horse. That's a lie. We won't even be able to get glue out of this philly when I'm done. I love ya BF and I hope you know this is all in good fun.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://the-obc.blogspot.com/2009/05/carlos-zambrano-just-stole-left-field.html' title='Carlos Zambrano just stole left field? Spring is in the air. Summer is on the doorstep. And right now we should all take a moment to consider our free time. And I offer a book reccomendation for warm weather enjoyment.

M*A*S*H by Richard Hooker

Lets forget about all of the reruns, reunions, documentaries and dissertations regarding the television show. Yes it ran forever. Yes it had some great moments, however, it holds its place in history largely based on the characters and framework contained in this book. The 1970 Robert Altman film is a great work. A fine adaptation of the book and a superior cast offers the most complete visualization of the printed work possible. I am not going to waste time on character descriptions or the history of the Korean War, I trust we all have a working knowledge thanks to pop culture.

From the first few paragraphs of the book you begin to see what a rich environment the book works in. Hooker has first hand knowledge of the setting and time and does particularly well with the little details that make characters interesting, not just in what our eventual heroes look and sound like, but their motivations in each crisis situation and need for self created chaos in a foreign war zone. That’s where the comedy comes in. There’s all the booze, pranks sex, and wisdom that keep the book in print to this day. The real heart of the book is the way the doctors support and protect one another, often at the expense of a much less liked character. But in the end these actions are not self serving. Whether in the case of a kidnapped colonel that allows a surgery to save a 6 month old half American, half Korean baby A fake funeral to get a friend over notions of suicide. Or the historic football game, which includes a drugged running back, trick plays, and winning a few thousand dollars to save an orphanage. Lesson learned, Its all in good fun and all can be forgiven if your intentions are good, everyone has a good time, and no one really gets hurt.

It’s a quick read, 180 pages in the paperback that I have, and its easy to pick up and get into. And if you ask nicely I could loan you mine. Anyone have a favorite book to re-read over the summer? This one's one of mine.

Lincoln's big week . . . Not exactly a good news week either . . .

On Monday, PETA's new spokesman was arrested on numerous charges. Acea Schomaker was wanted on a possession warrant and when authorities caught up with him, Schomaker was (go figure) possessing and ingesting pot. Good for him. No big deal right? That's when his bong began to meow. That's right, he stuffed Toonces inside his homemade bong to chill him out. Schomaker said the cat was high strung and that he had mellowed the kitty out before in a similar manner. Please god tell me he has not pro-created.

In other Lincoln news, Husker football players are becoming more acquainted with the Lincoln Police department. Barry Turner celebrated his medical redshirt with his girlfriend by getting in a domestic dispute. No charges were filed and Coach Pelini says the incident is behind them. Tight End Ben Cotton was ticketed last month for a disturbance and former Husker Willie Miller was convicted on a road rage beef. Last time we had this much trouble, Lawrence Phillips was dragging his girlfriend out of Scott Frost's pad by her hair and Dr. Tom was hiding handguns for players. I can safely predict that the 2009 Nebraska Cornhuskers are going to be National Champions.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://the-obc.blogspot.com/2009/03/lincolns-big-week-i-smell-title.html' title='Lincoln's big week . . . Nope, not dysfunctional, down, delusional, or dour. No ladies and gents, people are saying we may be skidding towards a DEPRESSION. I know, you can almost hear the air being sucked outta the room by all the collective gasps.

Check out this small write up on CNN. Never in my life would I have imagined I would be living in a time where this could happen. I remember my grandmother and all her jars of money around the house. The fear of and lack of trust that generation has of our banking and financial system seemed unimaginable. Are we headed to become the next generation that abandons the stock market? Are we the next generation of Americans to be sleeping on top of our money?

I religiously watch CNBC every morning and Erin Burnett is constantly trying to find the silver lining for her morning report on Squawk on the Street. Pretty tall order these days. I hope CNN can continue to pay her to try and find these silver linings. Apparently there are even concerns about their parent company.

Many of you know that D.C. is my most favorite city. I can geek out at all the museums and I love the hustle and bustle of the city. I'd love to live there. One of my favorite places in D.C. is the FDR memorial. I tried to upload a picture from my snapfish account and failed miserably. Bear with me, I'm not very techno savvy when it comes to uploading photos. So I give you the my best attempt.

I thought it was quite hilarious at the time. I even have another picture with all of us standing in line. Not so funny these days. First time un employment filings are at an all time high and seem to have no ceiling in sight. More companies are cutting jobs, freezing salaries and reducing production. When and where does it all end.

Thoughts anyone? I'm going to end this now because Birdhouse in your Soul is now playing and I feel like jumping around and singing along. It might make me feel better, for a little bit anyhow.

That's enough Rod.

Governor Rod Blajoevich's (hereto after referred to only as Rod because I hate typing his last name) impeachment trial is proceeding along fine without him or his lawyers present. The Illinois Senate played the wire taps of Rod's alleged misconduct today. The Senate has been instructed to move along without Rod's presence, viewing his absence as a plea of "not guilty". Meanwhile, instead of actually defending himself somewhere that has any legal standing, Mr. Hair has taken up an ambitious media defense. Who is the last person this worked for? This guy has to do time, doesn't he? Sadly for him, the truth is already coming out, behind the doors of the Illinois senate. The man says he is being lynched and not receiving a fair trial. Where else do you get fairness and justice than in the media.

I'm still waiting to hear from this guy.

Some dish

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_RSidPYul5tE/RutSqZOXIhI/AAAAAAAAAAk/mSVtuvFYMH4/s320/a_long_way_down.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5110269090461065746" />
<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_RSidPYul5tE/RutRtpOXIgI/AAAAAAAAAAc/rSrFxWkyu-s/s320/1386977987_l.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5110268046784012802" />
So here we go. I think everyone is done or is almost done with this book. Anyone else interested in reading this and commenting can find the book here.

The next book up has been chosen, by me, mostly because I haven't heard any other bright ideas. The book is entitled, "A Long Way Down" by Nick Hornby.
Mr. Hornby is an English writer who most of will know as the author of "High Fidelity". You can either purchase the book here or email me and I can make an amazon order on my account. Anyways the ball is rolling and honestly, fuck the yankees.

The OBC begins

Welcome friends to the OBC (Omaha Book Club).
